About Me...
Apart from serving as the Legal Guardian and Conservator for both of my grandparents, I am the mother of two incredible children and I secretly adore a gray 'ol fellow by the name of Henry Beau (ok, he's my cat).
My work was not done when my grandparents were rescued. It was not done when I relocated them near my home. It was not done when my uncle was charged. My work was still not done when my grandparents passed away. There is much to be learned from this tragedy and much to be celebrated from the outcome. As long as the opportunity presents, I will tell their story. In doing so, I am confident we will all learn how to better protect our loved ones.
In June 2011, I had the privilege of speaking at the 17th Annual VA Coalition for the Prevention of Elder Abuse conference. Along with the Supervising Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Forensic Investigator on the case, the presentation focused on our experiences successfully prosecuting my uncle for the charges of elder abuse.
In July 2012, I was invited to write a case study for Aging In Action, a quarterly published jointly by the Virginia Center on Aging and the Virginia Department for the Aging. The article was featured in the Winter 2012 issue and can be viewed by clicking on the link that follows: http://www.sahp.vcu.edu/vcoa/newsletter/ageaction/agewinter12.pdf
NBC 29 aired my story, "Albemarle Woman on a Mission to End Elder Abuse" on 03/22/12. The video is no longer available online. The print version can be viewed here: http://www.nbc29.com/story/17233367/elderly-abuse-concerns?client
In April 2012, I spoke at a Domestic Violence Law Enforcement conference as well as the 23rd Annual Virginia Geriatric Society Conference. I have written another piece that will be featured in the Fall 2012 issue of Generations, a nationally published geriatric journal.
While I continue to write and speak, listing each here is proving to be too lengthy. To request a complete copy of my Curriculum Vitae, please click on the "contact" link above.
My life motto is, “You have two hands- one for helping yourself; the other for helping others.” I welcome opportunities to pay forward the goodness that has come my way. I value a willingness to be transparent, an ability to be humble, and the chance to laugh often.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, photography, running, singing (though I'm totally tone deaf and can bring my children to tears with my vocals), cooking/baking, and time with friends/family. Apart from Christmas and Easter, my favorite day of the year is April Fool's Day! AND, while my hair color changes often, I promise that I'm still the same girl at the end of the day!
